OttesonDesign Design Director James Otteson currently leads Smart Era Lighting System's Research and Development department. Recently SELS had the honor of receiving Four 2022 LIT Design Awards in lighting. The SSL, TPS, and SG9100 were researched, designed, engineered, manufactured, and sold while James Otteson operated the department.

These Awards mark SELS's step into international recognition. For those of you who know LIT Design, you will know that this is one of the most prestigious lighting design awards. With thousands of applicants from all over the globe, the forty-three distinguished lighting experts who serve as Board Members of the LIT Design Awards Jury judges sort through the most cutting-edge innovative designs determining which ones are excellent.
This year, SELS took home all the awards given in the Solar Lighting category. Listed here are the products that secured this win:
ST-Series - A solar street lighting system designed to combine function and form. This unique product features a patented wave pattern, utilizing flexible solar panels, allowing it to increase solar energy reception and withstand hurricane-speed winds. This design has become widely received and has shed a fun and exciting light on a necessary industry, Solar Power. The ST-Series shows that cutting-edge technology can be combined with playful design to create a valuable and applicable solution.
SSL - A solar shelter lighting system designed to be highly durable, universally adaptable, and simple to install and provide maintenance. This shelter model is ideal in cities with public transportation that runs around the clock or in parks trying to modernize their amenities. Equippable with LEDs, cameras, motion sensors, Bluetooth receivers, or even Wi-Fi, the SSL provides safety and security for the passengers waiting for the bus or night-time park-goers. Designed to be sleek with a modern aesthetic, the SSL is visibly unobtrusive to the city’s residents.
TPS - A transit pole system designed to create a safe waiting zone for transit passengers when no bus station is available. This system provides area lighting for the passengers who rely on the bus during the night and a signal light activated by the user that will alert the bus driver that passengers are waiting. The TPS is robustly manufactured and assembled using UV-resistant, shock-proof ABS and non-corrosive aluminum. This stylish and modern product is engineered to stand up to all types of weather and function in the most demanding conditions while bringing new features that improve the transit system.
SG9100 - The SG9100 is a visually intriguing and innovative garden and pathway lighting system. This design showcases a rotatable head supporting an angled solar panel. The SG9100 breaks the connection between sun location and desired lighting angle, capable of being fixed in any direction at increments of 5 degrees without moving the focus of its projected light. In addition, this patent-pending rotation mechanism allows the bollard to utilize an angled solar panel, increasing its energy generation rate by up to 75%.
